Podcast Consumption in Portugal Enters a New Phase
Podcasting has become one of the most dynamic audio formats in Portugal , and recent data confirms that the market is no longer in an experimental phase. With the introduction of Pod_Scope, Portugal now benefits from a technical, audited and independent podcast measurement system, enabling consistent analysis and informed decision-making across the media ecosystem.
After one full year of operation, Pod_Scope has delivered something the podcast market has long needed: reliable, comparable and transparent data that replaces estimates with verified metrics.
February snapshot: 11.6 million podcast downloads
The latest Pod_Scope results show that February recorded 11.6 million podcast downloads, equivalent to an average of 2.9 million downloads per week. Compared to the previous month, this represents a 7.1% increase in average weekly downloads, reinforcing a clear growth trend in audio consumption.
This sustained increase highlights:
- Strong audience engagement with on‑demand audio
- Increasing regularity of podcast listening habits
- A growing opportunity for advertisers and brands
From a measurement perspective, these figures are especially relevant because they are audited and technically validated, ensuring consistency across publishers.
Market concentration and brand leadership
Pod_Scope’s ranking of the 200 most downloaded podcasts between 2 February and 1 March reveals a market led by established media groups:
- Observador
- Impresa
- Bauer Media
- Renascença Multimédia
When analysing downloads by brand, the concentration becomes even clearer. Five major brands account for 88.7% of total monthly downloads, distributed as follows:
- Observador: 26.9%
- Renascença: 22.1%
- Expresso: 13.4%
- Rádio Comercial: 13.3%
- SIC Notícias: 13.1%
This concentration demonstrates that podcasts are now a strategic extension of strong media brands, rather than a peripheral format.
From estimates to audited reality
In an interview with ECO +M, Manuel Monteiro, Media Research Director at Marktest, highlighted the structural change introduced by Pod_Scope. Since January 2025, podcast consumption in Portugal has been measured through server log data, following internationally recognised audit criteria.
One year after launch:
- More than 153 million downloads were recorded in 2025
- Around 34% of the Portuguese population declares listening to podcasts
- Podcast penetration has increased significantly compared to 2023
This shift from estimated audiences to audited measurement has positioned podcasting alongside other mature media channels in terms of accountability.
Why audited podcast measurement matters
For advertisers, agencies and publishers, measurement quality directly impacts investment confidence. Pod_Scope introduces:
- Comparable performance indicators across publishers
- Consistent reporting of downloads and listeners
- Greater transparency for media planning and ROI analysis
As a result, podcasts are increasingly seen as a credible and scalable advertising channel, supported by data rather than assumptions.
Expanding coverage and future developments
Pod_Scope currently integrates data from Bauer Media, Impresa, Observador and Renascença Multimédia. Importantly, RTP is expected to join by the end of Q2 2026, further expanding the scope and representativeness of the measurement system.
Looking ahead, future developments may include:
- Evolution from technical metrics to audience indicators
- Integration of sociodemographic profiling
- Greater data granularity and reporting frequency
These enhancements will further strengthen podcast measurement as a strategic tool for the media and advertising industries.
Measurement as the foundation for sustainable growth
The Portuguese podcast market is growing, but its long‑term sustainability depends on trustworthy measurement frameworks. By providing audited, independent and transparent data, Pod_Scope is laying the foundation for a more mature, investable and competitive podcast ecosystem.
At Minerva Insights, we believe that high‑quality measurement is essential to unlock the real value of emerging media formats, and podcasting in Portugal is a clear example of this transformation in action.
