Insights from a MediaMonitor study

International politics emerged as one of the most dominant themes in the Portuguese media during the first quarter of 2026. A study conducted by MediaMonitor, a company of the Minerva Insights Group, reveals the scale, intensity, and strategic relevance of international affairs in national news coverage — at a time marked by geopolitical instability and global uncertainty.

Drawing on comprehensive media intelligence capabilities, the analysis provides a data-driven overview of how international politics shaped the media agenda across press, television, and digital platforms.

Over 100,000 news items and €2.7 billion in media value

Between January and March 2026, Portuguese media published more than 100,000 news items focused on international political topics. At rate-card value, this coverage generated an estimated €2.7 billion in media return, highlighting both the volume and the impact of international affairs in the public sphere.

The study analyzed content from national newspapers, leading online news outlets, and prime-time news bulletins on free-to-air television channels, including RTP, SIC and TVI. This multi-channel approach reflects MediaMonitor’s methodology for delivering a holistic view of media exposure and value.

Digital media dominates volume, television drives impact

Digital media clearly led in terms of output. Online platforms accounted for over 104,000 news items, corresponding to more than €1.1 billion in media return. This confirms the internet’s central role in the continuous and immediate coverage of international events.

Television, despite a lower number of items (3,079 news pieces), generated the highest media value, exceeding €1.5 billion. Prime-time news bulletins remain critical in amplifying international issues and shaping public perception. The press published 4,412 articles, generating a more modest but still significant media return.

March market the peak of media intensity

A monthly analysis shows that March recorded the highest level of coverage across all media. This peak reflects the escalation of armed conflicts, diplomatic tensions, and key geopolitical developments that intensified international media attention during this period.

For communication and insights professionals, this reinforces the importance of ongoing media monitoring, as global events can rapidly alter both volume and tone of coverage.

Europe and the Middle East lead international coverage

From a geographic perspective, Europe was the most covered region, with more than 43,000 news items, followed by the Middle East, with around 30,000 references. These regions also concentrated the highest media return values, reflecting their central role in the international political agenda.

The Americas, Africa, and Asia/Oceania also featured prominently, although with comparatively lower levels of exposure and economic impact.

Conflicts and security at the core of media narratives

Across regions, conflict-related topics were the main drivers of coverage

  • Europe: the war in Ukraine, international security, energy tensions, and the European Union’s external relations.
  • Middle East: Iran-related tensions, the Israel–Gaza conflict, regional instability, humanitarian crises, and internal repression.
  • Americas: U.S. foreign policy, NATO relations, migration and economic strategy, as well as political developments in Venezuela.
  • Africa: a strong focus on humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Asia and Oceania: Chinese foreign policy, electoral processes, Taiwan, and internal political dynamics in North Korea.

Why this matters for media and insights professionals

The first quarter of 2026 confirms a structural trend: international politics is a core pillar of media coverage, not a secondary topic. Conflicts and wars account for more than half of international news content, while global actors — particularly the United States — appear as cross-cutting forces across multiple regions.

This study underscores the value of MediaMonitor’s media intelligence solutions in helping organizations understand exposure, narrative dynamics, and media impact. As part of the Minerva Insights Group, MediaMonitor transforms large-scale media data into actionable insights, supporting informed decision-making in an increasingly complex global environment.
