New Christmas rituals opportunities

Christmas is yet to be discovered: new rituals, new opportunities

For decades, Christmas has been a fertile, though somewhat predictable, territory for brands. However, something is changing, as new Christmas rituals opportunities are emerging. In recent years, we’ve been witnessing a profound transformation in how we live, celebrate, and consume Christmas. This holiday, traditionally associated with family gatherings, classic gifts, and hearty meals, is being reshaped by a culture that is increasingly global, digital, and performative.

Christmas starts earlier… and is celebrated in a big way

One of the first signs of change is the shift in the Christmas calendar. Today, the season doesn’t start in December but in November, or even late October, spurred by events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, imported from the United States. These milestones not only move consumption earlier but also change how we plan, what we buy, and even the emotional tone of the season. Instead of anticipation and pause, there’s immediacy and optimization.

And if the calendar moves forward, the scenery gets bigger: Christmas is no longer an intimate affair; it’s XXL. Cities compete for the tallest tree, the most spectacular light switch-on, or the most viral light show. It’s no longer enough to hang a few lights and set up a nativity scene. Today, we talk about 3D projections on buildings, interactive light tunnels, and open-air Christmas concerts that resemble festivals. Christmas has become immersive, Instagrammable, and maximalist.

A more global, diverse, and reinterpreted Christmas

Anglo-American cultural influence has introduced new traditions: from “Elf on the Shelf” to the widespread use of matching Christmas pajamas, to advent calendars that no longer contain chocolates but beauty products, craft beers, or tech gadgets.

Christmas is no longer just one thing but many different ways of celebrating, each with its own codes. For many, it’s a time of nostalgia and family; for others, it’s about self-gifting, traveling, or capturing the perfect photo of Christmas lights downtown.

At the same time, a new type of consumer is emerging; one who chooses to live a more conscious Christmas. These individuals prioritize responsible consumption, support local businesses over big chains, rationalize the amount of food and gifts, and aim to reconnect with the true meaning of the season. For them, Christmas is not a display of excess, but an opportunity to refocus on what matters: people, values, and community.

New needs, new consumption codes

All of this signals the rise of new needs, desires, and consumption moments. Brands that truly want to connect with consumers in this new holiday context must engage in deep listening and cultural observation.

It’s no longer enough to release a gift set and wish “Happy Holidays.” Today, we must ask:

  • What are people really looking for when they give a gift (or treat themselves)?
  • What role does social media play in that decision?
  • What makes a product “shareable,” “memorable,” or “giftable”?
  • How are new emotions being created around the act of giving?

New Christmas Rituals Opportunities: How Can Market Research Help?

Through research, we can help brands navigate this expanding new Christmas. It’s not just about quantifying spending, but understanding the why, how, and emotions behind it.

We can provide value through:

  • Cultural listening: Identifying emerging micro-rituals and weak signals that could become opportunities.
  • Understanding new consumer profiles: There are many types of Christmases happening simultaneously, and each audience experiences it in their own way.
  • Concept and value proposition validation: From packaging to digital campaigns, we need to test whether they connect with the right holiday emotion.
  • Strategic experience design: Helping brands create moments, not just products.

Christmas is no longer what it used to be, and that’s a good thing. It’s changing, growing, blending. It’s becoming more complex, richer, more visual and emotional. In short: a new narrative is being built, full of opportunities for brands that know how to observe and adapt.

Because Christmas, more than ever… is yet to be discovered.

And yes, all we want for Christmas is for our clients to continue trusting us, so we can keep growing together and enjoy an amazing 2026.
