The Portuguese television landscape continues to be dominated by entertainment content. According to recent data from MediaMonitor, television channels RTP1, RTP2, SIC, and TVI broadcast a combined total of over 5,000 hours of entertainment during the first half of 2026.

Entertainment: the core of tv programming

Analysis based on MediaMonitor data shows that entertainment accounted for 5,059 hours of content, representing 34% of total programming (excluding advertising). In practical terms, this means that more than one in every three minutes broadcast during the semester belonged to this category.

This reinforces a clear trend: entertainment remains at the heart of TV strategies, capturing audience attention and shaping programming decisions.

Information and fiction follow

After entertainment, information programs ranked second, with 3,262 hours (22% of total airtime). These were followed by:

  • Fiction: 2,710 hours (18.3%)
  • General culture content: 1,771 hours (12%)
  • Other formats: 13.6%

Key shifts vs. 2025

A closer look at year-on-year changes reveals evolving content priorities:

  • Fiction content increased significantly, gaining nearly 333 additional hours, rising from 16% to 18.3% of programming.
  • Sports programming also grew slightly, reaching 3% of airtime.
  • In contrast, youth programming saw the sharpest decline, dropping by 354 hours (from 9% to 6.7%).
  • Cultural content also decreased moderately, losing 110 hours year-on-year.

Channel differentiation strategy

Each channel continues to adopt a distinct positioning strategy:

  • RTP2 stands out as the most diverse, with a strong focus on:
    • Culture (31%)
    • Youth programming (20%)
    • Fiction (18.7%)
  • RTP1 leads in information content, accounting for 41.4% of such programming.
  • SIC dominates fiction, with 32.7% of total broadcast in this category.
  • TVI leads in entertainment, contributing 30.2% of all entertainment content aired.

What this means for insights professionals

These findings highlight several important implications:

  • Content mix remains a key competitive lever in traditional TV.
  • The rise of fiction suggests a continued investment in storytelling formats to retain audiences.
  • The decline in youth content may signal a shift toward digital platforms to capture younger viewers.
  • Channel differentiation is more strategic than ever, reinforcing brand identity through programming choices.

For insights professionals, understanding these dynamics is essential to interpreting audience behavior and guiding media and content strategies.
